Do I need to know how to swim to take a scuba diving course?
Yes, knowing how to swim is a requirement for taking a scuba diving course. It is required that you demonstrate basic swimming skills before you can become certified.

For the Open Water Diver course, for example, you'll need to pass a swim test that typically includes:
1. Swimming: You should be able to swim 200 meters (or 300 meters if using mask, fins, and snorkel) without stopping. There is no time limit for this, and you can use any swimming strokes you're comfortable with.
2. Floating or Treading Water: You should be able to float or tread water for 10 minutes.
These requirements are in place to ensure that you're comfortable and safe in the water, which is essential for scuba diving. If you're not a strong swimmer, it's a good idea to take swimming lessons and practice your swimming skills before starting a scuba diving course.
Are there any medical requirements or conditions that would prevent me from diving?
Yes, there are certain medical conditions that may prevent you from diving or require a physician's clearance before you can participate in scuba diving activities. It's important to ensure that you are medically fit for diving to avoid any potential risks to your health and safety underwater.
Some of the medical conditions that may require a doctor's clearance or may prevent you from diving include:
1. Respiratory Issues: Conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or a history of lung surgery can affect your ability to breathe comfortably and safely underwater.
2. Cardiovascular Problems: Heart conditions, high blood pressure, or a history of heart attacks or strokes may pose risks while diving.
3. Ear and Sinus Issues: Problems with equalizing pressure in the ears or sinuses, such as chronic ear infections or a history of ear surgery, can make diving uncomfortable or unsafe.
4. Neurological Disorders: Conditions like epilepsy, seizures, or a history of head injuries or strokes can increase the risk of complications while diving.
5. Diabetes: If you have diabetes, you need to have good control over your blood sugar levels and may require a doctor's clearance to dive.
6. Medications: Certain medications can affect your ability to dive safely, so it's important to discuss any medications you're taking with your diving instructor and doctor.
7. Pregnancy: Diving is generally not recommended during pregnancy due to the potential risks to the foetus.

Before starting a scuba diving course, you'll be required to complete a medical questionnaire to assess your fitness for diving. If you answer "yes" to any of the questions, you may need to obtain a doctor's clearance before you can participate in diving activities. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional familiar with diving medicine if you have any concerns about your medical fitness for diving.

What is the difference between SSI, PADI and other diving certifications?
SSI (Scuba Schools International), PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), and other diving organizations offer certification programs for scuba diving, each with its own curriculum and approach. Some other popular agencies, to name a few, include NAUI(National Association of Underwater Instructors), BSAC(British Sub-Aqua Club) and CMAS(Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques).

Each of these agencies have originated in different parts of the world, have varying degrees of presence and popularity across the world. While there are differences in their training approaches and course structures, all these organizations adhere to international standards for scuba diving education and safety. Certifications from any of these agencies are generally recognized worldwide, allowing divers to explore underwater environments across the globe.

It is our strongly held belief that each of these agencies have their respective positives and negatives. In evaluating what YOU should be choosing, the reputation of the Dive Center Operations, their Instructors and the standards that they uphold matter. "We choose the Instructor / Dive Shop, Not the Agency"
How long is my diving certification valid?
Your diving certification from reputable organizations is generally valid for life. Once you earn your certification, it does not expire, and you are considered a certified diver indefinitely.

However, it's important to note that if you have not been diving for an extended period, it is highly recommended that you take a refresher course before diving again. Most dive centers and instructors suggest that if you haven't dived in the last 6 to 12 months, you should complete a refresher to update your skills and knowledge for your safety and comfort underwater. This is especially crucial if you plan to engage in more advanced dives or challenging conditions.

The refresher course, often called a "Scuba Skills Update / Scuba Refresher" program, typically involves a review of essential diving concepts and in-water skills practice with a certified instructor. It's a great way to boost your confidence and ensure you're ready for your next diving adventure.
Can I dive anywhere in the world with my certification?
Yes, a scuba diving certification from a recognized organization is generally accepted worldwide. This means that once you are certified, you can dive in various locations around the globe, whether it's exploring coral reefs, shipwrecks, or underwater caves.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Local Regulations: Some diving sites or regions may have specific regulations or requirements. It's always a good idea to check the local diving rules and ensure you meet any additional criteria.
2. Dive Centers: While your certification is valid globally, individual dive centers may have their own policies regarding refresher courses or additional certifications for certain types of dives (e.g., deep diving, night diving).
3. Diving Conditions: Different parts of the world offer different diving conditions, such as visibility, currents, and water temperature. Make sure you are prepared and equipped for the specific conditions of the dive site.
4. Marine Life: Different regions have unique marine ecosystems. It's important to be aware of and respect the local marine life and environmental conservation efforts.
5. Insurance: Ensure you have appropriate diving insurance that covers you internationally, especially for medical treatment or evacuation in case of a diving emergency.

As long as you keep these considerations in mind and follow safe diving practices, your certification will allow you to enjoy diving adventures across the globe.
